Rethinking Schools (RS) is a nonprofit, independent publisher of educational materials. Its magazine, Rethinking Schools, reaches educators in all 50 states and abroad. RS advocates the reform of elementary and secondary education, with a strong emphasis on issues of equity and social justice.
While writing for a broad audience, Rethinking Schools emphasizes problems facing urban schools, particularly issues of race. Throughout its history, Rethinking Schools has tried to balance classroom practice and educational theory. It is an activist publication, with articles written by and for teachers, parents, and students. Yet it also addresses key policy issues, such as vouchers and marketplace-oriented reforms, funding equity, and school-to-work.

Founded in 1970, the Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) is a pioneering, community-based organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the healthy development of children in Central Harlem. Now serving 17,000 children and families within a 100-block zone, HCZ’s approach is to blanket an entire community with a seamless system of comprehensive programs to guide each child from birth through college graduation, implementing best practices at every developmental stage. HCZ is leading the revitalization of this most devastated community and serving as a model for tackling poverty and reforming public education systems nationwide.

Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum helps inner city kids learn to fly and focuses on changing communities one child at a time. They also provide a place for kids to go after school so they stay off the streets. They provide mentoring for those that really need it and try to inspire students to reach new heights. Their pilots (also known as “Aviation Explorers”) have already set more than seven world records and have written history all over again… just like the Tuskegee Airmen did many years ago!
